The Iowa football program brought the Class of 2019 to 20 players on Early Signing Day, as Alabama running back Shadrick Byrd committed to the Hawkeyes and signed his letter of intent after receiving a scholarship offer this past weekend.
Byrd, another three-star recruit by Rivals and 247, is Iowa’s second running back in this class, following Georgia RB Tyler Goodson. While Goodson looks to be a quick, shifty running back at 5’10” and 192 pounds, Byrd looks like a solid compliment. He doesn’t appear to have the same speed as Goodson, but what he lacks there, he makes up for with great vision and the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Take a look at his highlight tape – he shows excellent patience, allowing his blockers to create a running lane and leading to big plays.
While Byrd waited until the early signing period to make a decision on his collegiate future, it wasn’t due to a lack of offers. In total, 15 schools offered him a scholarship, including Louisville, Duke, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and a slew of others. He took an official visit to Troy (you know, that school that beat Nebraska in 2018) a couple weeks ago, but was quick to commit to the Hawkeyes after he received an Iowa offer a few days ago.
Welcome aboard, Shadrick! Can’t wait to see you running behind great Iowa offensive lines in the future!
