There will not be an alternate uniform for the Iowa football team in 2018, but the Hawkeyes will have a slightly new look Saturday when they host Northwestern.

The university revealed Wednesday that in honor of Veterans Day, Iowa players will wear special decals on their helmets with the numerals “24” — an homage to the jersey number of 1939 Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick, who died while serving in World War II.

On the other side of the helmet, the traditional Tigerhawk will be shown in red, white and blue — as has been done at times in the past.

Kinnick, for whom Iowa’s stadium is named, died June 2, 1943, during a U.S. Navy training flight off the coast of Venezuela. His famous Heisman Trophy speech is played before the national anthem at every Iowa home game.

Saturday’s kickoff between Iowa (6-3 overall, 3-3 Big Ten Conference) and Northwestern (5-4, 5-1) is set for 2:42 p.m. Fox is broadcasting the game.
