IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – University of Iowa football player T.J. Hockenson has become the first sophomore in history to win the John Mackey Award.
The tight-end was up against Kaeden Smith from Stanford and Jared Pinkney from Vanderbilt for the trophy.
The Chariton High School graduate has led Iowa with 46 receptions for 717 yards and six receiving touchdowns.
He comes in at seventh among Iowa tight ends of all-time with nine touchdown receptions and one career rushing touchdown.
The win also marks the Iowa Hawkeyes as the second school in history to claim two John Mackey trophies. Arkansas was the first to achieve the accomplishment.
Hockenson will receive the award Thursday at 5 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
