Gazette area Player of the Year Quinn Schulte will be a preferred walk-on for Iowa Hawkeyes

CEDAR RAPIDS — There’s Sean Considine. And Jake Gervase.

You can see Quinn Schulte being the next walk-on to start at safety for the Iowa Hawkeyes. So can he.

“Excited to be a Hawk,” the Cedar Rapids Xavier senior said, after announcing Sunday he is joining the UI football program as a preferred walk-on. “I’m ready to be part of The Swarm.”

Schulte helped lead Xavier to back-to-back Class 3A state championships, mostly as a quarterback. He accounted for 2,908 yards rushing and throwing and 48 touchdowns this season.

He also played safety for the Saints, intercepting a pass on the final play of Xavier’s 34-20 title-game win over Western Dubuque. That’s the position he believes he’ll play at Iowa.

Schulte was named The Gazette’s All-Area Team Player of the Year and also was 3A all-state captain, according to the Iowa Professional Sportswriters Association. His brother, Bryce, also walked on at Iowa two years ago and got into a couple of games this season at tight end.

Oldest brother, Reggie, was a quarterback at Northern Iowa and just completed his first season as a Xavier assistant coach. The Schulte’s father, Duane, is Xavier’s head coach and was just named Iowa’s Coach of the Year by the National High School Federation.

Quinn Schulte said he had a scholarship offer from FCS South Dakota State, as well as from several Division II schools. But it’s Iowa where he wants to be.

“Coach (Kirk) Ferentz and Coach (Reese) Morgan were great throughout the entire process,” he said. “I’ve seen what they’ve done with walk-ons and their culture and how they approach things. I want to be able to be a part of that. I also have seen how they treat my brother down there, which was really nice. I kind of got an inside look at the program.”
